For Jade, life changed dramatically when ill health forced her to leave her job as a full-time carer. Physically unable to work, she had no choice but to rely on means-tested benefits. The process of applying was long and exhausting, involving numerous assessments by the Department for Work and Pensions. Eventually, Jade was deemed permanently disabled and awarded disability benefits, but by then, the financial damage had already been done.
During the months without a stable income, Jade built up significant debts simply trying to survive. Her only personal asset was a ring given to her by her late father. To cover essential living costs, she borrowed from a pawnbroker using the ring as security. As interest mounted, the debt quickly became unmanageable. She also relied on Buy Now, Pay Later schemes to purchase food and household items.
By the time Jade came to Citizens Advice Barnet, her total debt had risen to over £39,000. The constant calls and letters from creditors were taking a serious toll on her health. She described being so anxious that she was afraid to answer the phone.
Our team first ensured Jade was receiving her full benefit entitlement. We then registered her for the Breathing Space scheme, which immediately stopped creditor contact and gave her much-needed respite. Alongside this, we provided tailored money advice to help her understand her finances and the debt solutions available.
Given her circumstances, we supported Jade to apply for a Debt Relief Order (DRO). The application was approved by the Insolvency Service.
The DRO cleared £39,293.27 of unmanageable debt, giving Jade the chance to focus on her health and regain stability. Reflecting on the support she received, Jade told us she could finally “see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
