Volunteer Interview: Ronnie
Ronnie joined Citizens Advice Barnet in late 2019, having retired from a career as a life insurance actuary. His Citizen’s Advice training was interrupted by Covid and he qualified as a Generalist Adviser in February 2022.
What is your role at Citizens Advice Barnet?
I have two different roles! One day a week, I answer calls to our Adviceline, which is when clients first contact us by phone. The client is given a brief initial assessment after which I decide, with the help of a Supervisor if necessary, a course of action to resolve their issue. For example, this may be a subsequent appointment to discuss the issue in more detail. I do this telephone work from home.
On a second day a week, I act as a Generalist Adviser, doing face-to-face appointments in the office. Most of the issues I deal with are to do with benefits, council tax, debt and housing.
Why do you volunteer at Citizens Advice Barnet?
I’ve known about Citizens Advice for many years and always thought that I might volunteer when I retired. Then I met someone who had worked at the Hendon Office and he encouraged me to apply.
Volunteering at Citizens Advice Barnet is a great way to discharge my social conscience. I feel very comfortable with the organisation’s values and I think my skills fit the requirements. I love the fact that there is always work to do, something that does not apply to all voluntary work. I enjoy the teamwork and the diverse mix of colleagues, and the fact that, at my age, I get to work with people half my age age or younger. And I never stop learning!
Is there anything you’ve done while volunteering with us that you’re particularly proud of?
Keeping cool and providing a high standard of advice for any client that comes through the door, no matter the case!
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering at Citizens Advice Barnet?
Go for it! It requires commitment but it’s interesting work and incredibly rewarding. I love the variety of my two roles!
