Meet Ma’isha, who volunteers as a trainee generalist adviser and supports various parts of our service, including outreach sessions and the advice line. She joined Citizens Advice Barnet to gain hands-on experience in advising clients and has found real value in supporting people through challenging times. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.

What brought you to volunteer with us?

I chose to volunteer with Citizens Advice Barnet to get experience with giving advice to people as a law student and to get experience helping the community.

Tell us a bit about your role here

I am a trainee generalist adviser and I also volunteer at our outreaches, which is a place where clients can come to us and tell us about their issues without having an appointment to be there. I also support reception and am on the adviceline, depending on what’s needed.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I enjoy being able to help people through really tough times, and give them some guidance to help get clients’ lives back on track. Even small things, like helping them fill in a form, can really impact people’s lives and knowing that we can make that difference.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

Do it. It’s quite rewarding and the team here is very supportive. Although it can be tiring work, I’ve enjoyed the work I do here, knowing that I am helping clients solve their problems, or at least give them some information to help them through their struggles.
