Volunteer Interview: Catherine
Introducing Catherine, a trainee adviser at Citizens Advice Barnet. Catherine who is retired was motivated by a long-standing admiration for Citizens Advice to contribute her time and skills to aid community members in need.
What brought you to volunteer with us?
I’ve known about Citizens Advice for years and always valued what they do. Now that I’m retired, I’m very pleased to be able to contribute to such a useful service.
What is your role at Citizens Advice Barnet?
I started at the end of last year and I’m a trainee adviser.
Why do you volunteer at Citizens Advice Barnet?
To do something useful with my time and to give back – now that I have the chance.
Is there anything you’ve done while volunteering with us that you’re particularly proud of?
It’s very early days yet. I mostly sit in reception and field questions from people who come to the door. The most rewarding thing is when people – who are very stressed when they arrive – leave with a look of relief and a smile. I feel I have helped them on their way.
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering with us?
Just do it! It’s very rewarding. The staff are so friendly and super helpful, the atmosphere is very supportive and the problems the clients face can be daunting, but are often solvable – with a bit of help.
