Role Profile

An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone with great interpersonal skills and a comprehensive welfare benefits services that included casework and advocacy for people affected by Cancer. 

You will be part of the Macmillan project team who provides advice and information services to those affected by cancer across North London at Barnet General, Chase Farm, Finchley Memorial, North Middlesex Hospitals and the North London Hospice sites. We can offer you an exciting opportunity to help deliver welfare benefits advice to some of our most needy clients, based at our outreach locations. 

About us

Citizens Advice Barnet is a local charity giving free and confidential advice to everyone who lives, works, or studies in Barnet. We are an independently registered charity, a member of the Citizens Advice network, and a London Legal Support Trust Centre of Excellence. We offer generalist advice on debt, work, benefits, immigration, housing and more and specialist casework on benefits, debt, work and immigration. Last year we helped over 12,700 people with over 42,350 problems.

Key role purpose:
  • Provide the full range of advice activities to assist people affected by cancer with welfare and disability benefits issues. 
  • Provide advocacy for clients through external networks.
  • Complete statistical information records fully compliant with organisational and funding requirements.
Normal place of work:Hendon NW4 & travel to various outreach locations will be required
Contract length:Permanent –  Part- Time (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday)

Job Description

  • Provide the full range of advice activities to assist people affected by cancer with welfare benefits issues
  • Advocate for clients as appropriate and, liaise and/or negotiate on behalf of clients with other organisations, as required  
  • Prepare cases for clients intending to appeal benefit decisions with the relevant tribunal service
  • Complete statistical information records fully compliant with organisational and funding requirements 
  • Provide support and training experience to Project volunteers
  • Assist with social policy work by being aware of current social policy issues, spotting new ones and discussing these with affected clients. 
  • Keep up to date with legislation, case law, policies and procedures relating to welfare benefits advice and undertake appropriate training
  • Attend and participate in any relevant forums as detailed by Macmillan Cancer support.  
  • Assist the Project Manager in producing reports, showing the progress of the service in achieving its aims and objectives and outcomes
  • Demonstrating an understanding of CAB Health & Safety, and Safeguarding Policies
  • As with all roles at CAB, to be carried out in a way commensurate with our organisational values – Committed, Together, Supportive, Respectful 
  • The post will involve travelling to different locations within the London Boroughs of Barnet, Finchley, Enfield & Haringey and to neighbouring boroughs. There may also be some home visiting on occasions

Person specification

  1. Recent experience of advice work including welfare benefits advice
  2. A broad up to date and in depth practical experience of disability benefits advice
  3. Ability to research, understand and relay complex information
  4. Being a good listener with a empathetic approach to all clients needs
  5. Ability to write accurate case records, draft letters and reports
  6. Ability to work well as part of a team and on your own initiative
  7. Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with clients and people from diverse backgrounds
  8. A good working knowledge of IT
